It may seem counterintuitive, but an approach to making it through to your miracle is by learning to “hang out” in a mentally-neutral zone.  This skill may seem difficult but it can be learned.  Fertility patients are warriors and warriors by definition are pumped up.  But maintaining the intensity needed for the challenge mandates letting go from time to time so as to rejuvenate.  My work with people in the baby quest has been about teaching people to value alternating between doing and being.

Meanwhile, here are offer four little tidbits of advice – ways to stay in your skin:

  1. Always, the breath is a reliable resource. Try enjoying the benefit now – take a long slow deep inhalation, long slow deep exhalation.

 

  1. Remind yourself that the mind abhors a vacuum. Unfortunately, it has a bad habit of filling itself with the negative, which seems to happen automatically.  Be ready with a list of positive affirmations for use as counterpoint.

 

  1. Reach out for support. This is not easy since conception/pregnancy is none of anyone’s business except yours.  But ‘not easy’ does not mean impossible.  If even a trusted friend feels not quite acceptable, what about a professional?

  1. The only surefire way to separate the mind from the body is with a guillotine. Come to my stress reduction classes or try a private session to learn stress reduction techniques that go a long way to maintaining the serenity that  comes  with mind/body unity.
